SCHOOL BASED PLANNING IN INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY: PRINCIPLES, TEMPLATES & GUIDELINES

Planning and use of information and communication technology (ICT) is fundamental to quality teaching and learning and should be an integral component of planning at school and system level.

This planning guide is a resource for school leadership teams and other key school personnel, who are:

  • Expanding the use of ICT within their school
  • Consolidating the next phase of ICT within their school or
  • Utilising ICT to drive school transformation.

Planning for the implementation and future enhancement of ICT is a complex exercise, but one that can be achieved by strategic planning.

Planning in ICT should be aligned with other areas of school planning by being incorporated as one of the areas for development listed in the School's Strategic Plan. This establishes areas for development over a 3-5 year period and how this is to be financed.

From this Strategic Plan the school develops a Management Plan for each Focus Priority. This identifies the outcomes, strategies, timeframe, responsibilities budget and evaluation for each priority area in the Strategic Plan for the next year.

This then is translated into a Project Plan for each priority. A project focuses on a specific project or program that has been identified in the Management Plan.

Assistance from a team is important at every stage of the process. Team members should include those teachers and leaders who will drive the plan within the school. They may include the Learning Technology Specialist, Teacher Librarian, CEO staff and committed teachers who will convince others, model effective practice and help drive the change. The team should also include the wider school community, such as the students, parents and school board.

It is important to create shared ownership of the school's plan within this group of people, so that there is commitment to its implementation.
