Animals Use in Schools - ACT

Purpose:

This policy gives direction to principals and staff of NSW schools in relation to the acceptable use of animals in schools.

Policy:

All NSW Catholic schools, as well as staff and/or students, who use live animals in any classroom or other teaching/learning situation must do so in accordance with the requirements as published in Animals in Schools: Animal Welfare Guidelines for Teachers. A copy of this publication has been provided to all NSW Catholic schools.

Definitions:

‘Animals' are non-human vertebrate animals (with a backbone) and include all fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

Procedures:

1. Whenever a decision about using animals for teaching activities is made, it is essential that consideration is given to the:

1.1 replacement of animals with other methods;
1.2 reduction in the number of animals used;
1.3 refinement of techniques used to reduce the impact on animals.

2. Reference is to be made to the list of categories of approved activities involving animals contained in the above publication.
