Purpose:

This policy outlines the Professional Development opportunities to be provided for Assistant Principals, Religious Education Coordinators & Coordinators.

Policy:

This policy reflects the shared responsibility of the Director of the CEO and the Principal in ensuring that the leadership provided to school communities and the wider Church is of the highest calibre. The policy seeks to promote this through collaboration with Assistant Principals, RECs and Coordinators in areas of professional development, accountability, and career path development. The CEO recognises that the Professional Development of Assistant Principals, Religious Education Coordinators and Coordinators is a joint responsibility shared between the CEO and staff in Promotion Positions.

Definitions:

“Assistant Principal” means a teacher appointed as such in a school who assists the Principal in his or her responsibility for the conduct and organisation of the school.

“Religious Education Co-ordinator” means a teacher appointed as the leader of the team of Religious Education teachers, who share responsibility for the implementation of Religious Education.

“Co-ordinator” means a teacher appointed as such in a school who is responsible to the Principal for the co-ordination of the programme of work in an area of instruction or activity as determined by the Principal.

The use of the term ‘Coordinator' in the policy refers to all Coordinators in Archdiocesan primary and secondary schools including the following:

  • General Coordinator
  • Middle School Coordinator
  • Primary Coordinator
  • Curriculum Coordinator
  • Subject Coordinator
  • Studies Coordinator
  • Year Coordinator
  • House Coordinator
  • Pastoral Coordinator
  • Pastoral Care Coordinator
  • Teaching Coordinator
  • Learning Technologies Coordinator

A Religious Education Coordinator (REC) is referred to separately.

Procedures:

1. The Catholic Education Office recognises the need for Assistant Principals, RECs and Coordinators to engage in professional development which supports the acquisition of knowledge and skills relevant to leadership and school management.

2. Assistant Principals

2.1 Assistant Principals will have access to the Assistant Principals Retreat, the Assistant Principals Network meetings, Religious Education scholarships, school-based professional development, and the CEO Leadership Development Program.

2.2 The Assistant Principals Network meetings provide an interactive forum where Assistant Principals can contribute to and receive professional development collaboratively. Assistant Principals should access this forum wherever possible.

2.3 It is expected that Assistant Principals will also engage in professional development through professional associations and other professional development providers relevant to their areas of responsibility.

3. RECs & Coordinators

3.1 RECs will have access to the REC Retreat and Regional RE Meetings. RECs and Coordinators will have access to seminars, network meetings, Religious Education scholarships, school-based professional development, and the CEO Leadership Development Program.

3.2 It is expected that RECs and Coordinators will also engage in professional development through professional associations and other professional development providers relevant to their areas of responsibility.
