Purpose:

The purpose of the policy is to ensure all schools promote and practise sun smart procedures.

Policy:

Each school will develop policies and procedures relevant to their own school environment that will promote among students, staff and parents:

  • Positive attitudes towards skin protection.
  • Lifestyle practices which can help reduce the incidence of skin cancer and the number of related deaths
  • Personal responsibility for the decision making about skin protection.
  • Awareness of the need for environmental changes in schools to reduce the level of exposure to the sun.

Nil

Procedures:

1. As part of the normal Health curriculum students will be taught the principles of sun protection.

2. As part of the School Registration and Review process schools to carry out an audit of the school plant ensuring adequate shade and shelter for students, staff and parents.

3. In determining school uniform school boards will ensure uniforms are sun smart
